Step-by-step Reinforced Concrete Beam Design Process

Civil Engineering Tips

Reinforced concrete (RC) is a composite material in which concrete’s relatively low tensile strength and ductility are counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having higher tensile strength or ductility. The reinforcement is usually, though not necessarily, steel reinforcing bars (rebar) and is usually embedded passively in the concrete before the concrete sets. Reinforcing schemes are generally designed to resist tensile stresses in particular regions of the concrete that might cause unacceptable cracking and/or structural failure. Modern reinforced concrete can contain varied reinforcing materials made of steel, polymers or alternate composite material in conjunction with rebar or not. Reinforced concrete may also be permanently stressed (in compression), so as to improve the behavior of the final structure under working loads.

civilpe.net presenting 3 sets of video tutorial about how to work with reinforced concrete beam design step-by-step. Watch the following videos now.

For a strong, ductile and durable construction the reinforcement needs to have high relative strength, high toleration of tensile strength, good bond to the concrete irrespective of pH or moisture, thermal compatibility and durability.

Almost all projects, be it multistoried buildings, dams or small projects, RC beam designing is fundamental step. Advantages of Reinforced Concrete beams – they are capable of resisting fire for a longer time, have longer service life with low maintenance cost, with structures like Dams it is most economical, yields rigid member with minimum apparent deflection and many more.

Designing Reinforced Concrete Beam can be achieved by a number of methods. It can be designed either by Working Stress Method or by Strength Design Method. Knowing the designing of beams is the basic knowledge for any civil engineer and gives you an edge over others.

Although there are software to calculate and design the beams, but basic designing is very welcome for any project. Understanding the designing can best be done by reading the method and examples related to it.
